Beyond the Bootcamp: Coach Kathy Trains International Professionals for the Philippine AEP Requirement

Yesterday, something quietly beautiful happened at SOVA.

Coach Katherine “Kathy” Padilla wasn’t teaching a room full of aspiring Filipino VAs. She was teaching two international professionals — one from Malaysia and one from China — as part of their Alien Employment Permit (AEP) requirement here in the Philippines.

And what she wrote about it afterward is worth sharing.

In Coach Kathy’s own words

“One of my favourite parts of being a trainer? Meeting people from different cultures. 🥰

Today, I had the privilege of conducting a Customer Service training for a Malaysian and a Chinese professional as part of their Alien Employment Permit (AEP) requirement here in the Philippines.

I came in excited with activities and role plays prepared, but I quickly realised I needed to adjust my approach because of the language barrier. And that’s the beauty of teaching — meeting people where they are and helping them learn.

Looking forward to our next session on Wednesday. ❤️”

Coach Katherine Padilla, SOVA Co-Founder

Notice what she doesn’t say: “I stuck to my plan.” Or “They needed to keep up.”

She adjusted. On the fly. Mid-session. Because that’s what a real teacher does.

What is the AEP (Alien Employment Permit) — and why does it need training?

For readers outside the Philippine business context: the Alien Employment Permit (AEP) is a document issued by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) that allows a foreign national to legally work in the Philippines. It’s a serious compliance requirement for both the foreign professional and their Philippine-based employer.

A common condition tied to the AEP is skills transfer and localization training — the foreign professional is expected to understand how to work effectively with Filipino teams, Filipino customers, and Philippine business culture. Customer service training is one of the most-requested categories for this.

That’s exactly where SOVA came in.

What “meeting learners where they are” actually looks like

Kathy had a full training deck ready: Customer_Service_Training.pptx — with activities, role plays, a “Quick Recap” section, an “Action Plan” module, and everything you’d expect from a professional customer service program.

Then she opened Zoom, met her two participants, and realised the plan needed to change.

Language barrier. Not a small one.

Most trainers, at that moment, do one of two things: barrel through the deck anyway (and lose the room), or panic. Kathy did the third thing — the harder thing. She slowed down. She simplified language. She checked understanding. She turned monologue into conversation. She let the pace of the class be set by the learners, not the deck.

That’s not a skill you can put on a slide. It’s a decade of coaching experience showing up in real time.

What this signals for SOVA

Most people know SOVA as a Virtual Assistant training school for Filipinos. That’s still our core mission — and it’s still the biggest part of what we do.

But sessions like this one point to something bigger: SOVA has quietly become a professional corporate training provider, with proven experience delivering:

  • Customer service training for AEP compliance
  • Communication and cultural adaptation for foreign professionals working in the Philippines
  • Skills transfer programs tied to DOLE requirements
  • Onsite and online corporate training in Cebu, Iligan, CDO, Butuan, and Bukidnon
  • Bespoke customer service, operations, and remote-work training for local and international companies

If your company employs foreign professionals in the Philippines and needs AEP-aligned training — or if you just need world-class customer service training for your team — we can help.

The “next session on Wednesday” continues

Kathy signed off her post with a simple line: “Looking forward to our next session on Wednesday. ❤️”

Two international professionals — from Malaysia and China — will keep learning from a Filipino coach in Cebu. That’s what a modern, professional Philippine training ecosystem looks like. And we’re proud SOVA gets to be part of it.
